Operation Troubleshooting

In an AGPM plot window, when I try to Export to Excel, I get an error message: “Error 9 – subscript out of range”.  What is happening?

We believe this error is related to use of regional decimal conventions different from U.S. number conventions (decimal placeholder is a dot, not a comma).  Try changing your Regional Settings for numbers to U.S.-English or reinstalling Microsoft Office using U.S.-English settings.  Here is how one AGPM user resolved this problem:

“My Excel is in Portuguese and I was getting the Error 9 on export from AGPM to Excel.  I tried the export in my girlfriend’s laptop, Windows 7 64bits, Excel 2013 32-bit in US-English, and it worked fine.  So, I reinstalled my Microsoft Office in US-English and now AGPM export to Excel works perfectly, even with my laptop in EU metric system.”

When I try to read and open a *.w2p file with AGPM, I get an error message: “irec 1 error, iday, I, ii 1 1 1”  and then another saying “Run-time error ‘63’, Bad record number”.  What is happening?

The error message indicates that the program was trying to locate a record for day 1 in the .w2p file where there is no record number 1.  This might happen if you had done a W2 run that set up the header record, but never reached the point of actually writing out anything.  This might happen if you have your starting date for AGPM output set out of range of the run that you are doing.   Look at the size of your .w2p file; if it seems very small, this would indicate this sort of problem.

If this doesn’t help, try to create a very small .w2p file that exhibits the problem and e-mail it to jparsly@charter.net with a note explaining the problem.  We can usually determine what is wrong fairly quickly, given an example file.

In the METFIND routine in W2i, sometimes the same station appears in the ISWO and NCDC lists, but the distances to my reservoir location are different.  Why?

METFIND uses the LAT-LON in the ISWO and NCDC station listings to compute the distances.  If those LAT-LONs are not correct, the distances computed by METFIND will not be correct.  We have found the NCDC LAT-LONs to be somewhat unreliable, so the distances calculated may not be correct.  User caution is advised – use the distances only as a very rough guide to relative position of the stations.  Unfortunately, we have no control over the LAT-LON values reported in the ISWO and NCDC station listings that are used by METFIND to compute distance.

In AGPM, when I use Autoprofile with Express (Separated)…, sometimes a model profile will plot with no field data, or maybe with one field data point overlaid  instead of all of them.  What is happening?

This occurred due to certain timing tolerances that were set in AGPM.  The problem has been resolved in AGPM-2D v3.21 and higher.

When I run AGPM, the buttons are chopped off and I cannot see the Plot button.  What is happening?

You may have too high a video resolution set and your fonts had to be enlarged to be visible at that resolution.  We suggest 1024x768 with AGPM with Windows Standard Appearance scheme (or Standard Windows XP) with Small (or Regular Fonts).  This should make all the buttons and their labels visible.

When I run W2i, I get a smaller than normal window, then if I do View Bathymetry, all the segment boxes are triangles and the orientation is all wrong.  What is happening?

You must have closed W2i previously with one of its processes running.  If you run W2i, then use it to run AGPM or the editor on one of the input files, then close W2i leaving the AGPM or editor window open, then when you restart W2i you will have the problem you describe.  Just close those other windows and then restart W2i and all should work fine.

When I dbl-click AGPM32.EXE in Windows Explorer to run it, I get a message saying it must be run from the Win2D shell.  Why is that?

There are 2 ways to run AGPM.  If you want to run it outside the W2i shell, you must have a valid AGPM.LIC file in the folder with your AGPM32.EXE program.  You can run AGPM from the W2i interface regardless of the presence of an AGPM.LIC file.  W2i requires a valid w2i.key file) in the folder with W2I.EXE.

Using AGPM to capture an AVI, Hypercam aborts with general protection fault (GPF Details… button says problem is MSVIDC32.DLL).  AGPM then aborts.

This is usually caused by a temporary resource problem.  You should reboot your computer.  Also, if you are trying to capture large screens with fast replay rates on a slow computer, you can get this response from Hypercam.

In AGPM I get the error message “Can’t create Auto-Redraw image” when I try to add another portfolio item, then AGPM aborts.

This is usually caused by a temporary resource problem.  You should reboot your computer.

I get the error “Fatal error reading geometry file ____” when I select a certain run (or when it opens a portfolio that uses a certain run) in AGPM.

This is most likely due a W2 simulation that sent no output to the “runname.W2P” file for AGPM.  This might happen, for example, if you have AGPM output specified to start at day 180 in W2_CON.NPT but the W2 simulation stopped for some reason prior to day 180.

Many of the functions in Input Tools are not operational yet.  In our version only the Lat Inflows and Initial Conditions tabbed pages have anything in them.  All the other are blank boxes.

Yes, those features are not yet available.  Over time we will add those features.

I can't seem to view the bathymetry file in AGPM.   It gives an “Error 13" and then bombs out.  However, I can view the example files that came with Win2dW2 but I can not see any obvious difference between the example (De Gray) and our bathymetry file that  would cause it to terminate.  I use PFE32 as editor to edit the text files.

In earlier versions of the W2 interface, this may have been due fields in your bathymetry file that are not separated by spaces.  If you have an entire field of 8 characters taken up with numbers from one field to the next, AGPM viewer will croak.  Try rounding down the numbers by 1 decimal place so each field of 8 can start with a space to separate it from the previous field.  Also, make sure you don't have any tabs in your bathymetry file.  This limitation has been fixed in more recent versions of W2i.

Recently I switched from Win98 to NT. Everything works fine, only the screen output during the calculation shows non- readable characters.  I know this has something to with the ANSI character display.  Looking around at the internet I found some recommendations how to make this work (http://www.nthelp.com/40/ansiNT.htm). The main change is in config.nt:
       Device=%systemroot%\system32\ansi.sys
An example batch file that uses those characters (e.g. <Esc>[40 and so on) and the calls command.com works fine. But W2 does not. It seems to ignore the settings I used. Also calling w2.exe from within the batch file does NOT work. Other sources recommend to use DOS 5.0. I did this but without success. Is there any way to see the screen output in a readable form?

You are correct in that ANSI.SYS for NT does not seem to work with W2.  We have not found a way to use the W2 escape sequences in NT.  We think the problem may be compiler dependent and we are pondering a fix.  The only thing you can do for now is to reprogram those W2 screen outputs to avoid use of the finicky escape sequences.  More recent versions of the package for W2 v3.11 avoid this problem altogether by showing alternate status information in the run window.

I had a problem when I changed the vertical and horizontal smoothing options for the animation plots from low to high.  Instead of simply updating the colors on the plot, as was done with the low smoothing option, the entire plot was deleted and then redrawn.  This gave an undesirable flashing off and on appearance to the animation.

That is just the plot resetting itself - it does this once and will do it again if you go back to low res.  You really should not change the resolution of smoothing in the middle of an animation.  If you have high res saved in your portfolio, AGPM will (next time you open the portfolio) display it without a reset.  Remember that high res will slow down the animation speed, so we suggest you only use this res for making nice report ready plots.

The colored distance-depth contours over-lap the reservoir bottom and the plot areas.  What is wrong?

That is an old bug that has been fixed in the latest version of AGPM.

When I try to run AGPM, I get "fatal error" reading geometry file.  What is happening?

This was an early problem with the 16-bit version (now obsolete), but it has long been fixed in the 32-bit version.

When I run AGPM, I get dithered colors in the animation plots. What should I do?

You need to use a video driver that uses at least 64K colors, and you need to use this setting.
